Sierra Trek Turns 50

Ramsey Wood’s International Scout II idled up everything thanks to the Cummins 4BT engine. Locked 1-ton axles transfer the torque to 41.5-inch Pit Bull Rocker tires mounted on HUMVEE wheels.

Once arriving at Meadow Lake the trail might be done, but the party is just starting. A huge raffle, live band, dance floor, and bar are all constructed for Sierra Trek. There are even hot showers to wash off the dust!

Testing Pit Bull Tire’s Newest All-Terrain In All Terrains

Nowadays, enough is never enough. And good certainly isn’t good enough. We demand excellence, and more often than not, that’s what we get—especially with today’s new-fangled computer-designed tires. In the old days, you got the feeling tire tread was dreamt up by some kid who just hopped off his Schwinn Stingray. “Let’s add a lion’s head and dragon wings and make big, meaty lugs that’ll sound mean and pissed off.

Killer 1979 Chevrolet K5 Blazer

Nostalgia is a powerful motivator. John Schnatter of Papa John’s Pizza recently paid $250,000 for the Camaro he had sold in 1983 to start his pizza business. Fortunately for Joel Rasmus, his parents had the good taste to buy a K5 Blazer instead of a car, yet nostalgia still holds the same motivation. Joel’s folks bought this Chevy K5 Blazer in 1978, the year he was born. It was relatively stock when Joel bounced around in the back with his brother Ben on family adventures, but all of that changed in 2008 after Joel took ownership of the Blazer.

2005 Jeep Wrangler TJ - Second 4x4

We've always admired families that use four-wheel-drive vehicles for outdoor recreation and adventure. Exploring the great outdoors through this country's vast network of trail systems and off-road parks is a great way to get to know America, sharpen advanced driving skills, and push the limits of kinship in a little competitive off-highway fun.

1981 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler - Jeeper's Dream

Trailer queens just ain't our thing. We guess that's why our staff shares an affinity for rusty, dented, and well-beaten 4x4s that are functional and trailworthy.

However, we always appreciate a good-looking, squeaky-clean rig that's well used and ready to tackle the toughest terrain. When we found Gary Thorn running his super-sano Jeep Scrambler over the tough trails of Moab like it was one of the staff's rusty trail relics, we just had to stop and take notice.

2007 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited - J 100 K

Missouri 4Wheelers Supply, better known as 4WS.COM, is a major distributor of 4x4 parts and is known for its Jeep conversions. After a trip to the SEMA convention in Las Vegas in 2006 and being inspired by how the aftermarket had already embraced the new Jeep Wrangler JK, 4WS.com owner Kevin Wyas decided to get a JK of his own to show off a few of the parts his company offered. The plan was to keep it mild-at least that was the plan

1978 International Scout Traveler - 2008 Top Truck Challenge Finalist

A significant amount of work was done to the structure and body of the Traveler. Eighteen inches of the rear frame was discarded and four new crossmembers were added. The body is hard-mounted directly to the frame, the rear was narrowed and all of the fenders were radiused to give the big 44x19.5-16.5 Pit Bull Rocker tires plenty of room to move. Hummer H1 wheels have Copperhead Fab centers and rock rings.

The World’s Most Capable Chevy Colorado?

Jack Stanko has owned plenty of Jeeps, fullsize Chevy trucks, and tube buggies over the years. In fact, he has a bit of a reputation for changing vehicles more often that most of us change oil. Jack’s latest vehicle, built by Nate’s Precision in Reno, Nevada, combines the best qualities of all of these previous vehicles into one. I have always been a Chevy guy, but I bought Jeeps because they fit better on the trails I like to frequent, Jack explained. When Chevy put the 5.3L V-8 engine in the Colorado, I knew I wouldn’t need another Jeep.

James Duff Ford Bronco Disc Brake Swap - Slow Your Steed

Disc brakes were not an option on the front of a Ford Bronco until the 75 model year, and they were never offered from the factory on the rear of a Bronco. Our Death Proof Bronco came with four-wheel drums that were adequate with the dinky stock tires, but after adding 35-inch Pit Bull Rockers we had to anticipate which way the Bronco was going to pull every time we hit the brakes, and stopping distances were on par with a loaded semi-truck.

2005 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 - Low Slung

It's rare that you'll see a featured truck with such minimal suspension modifications as Todd Farrand's 2005 Ram 2500. With true-to-size 41.5-inch-tall Pit Bull Rocker radials on TrailReady beadlocks riding under factory sheetmetal, this truck is outfitted with only 2 inches of lift … thanks to a large amount of sheetmetal cutting by Mercenary Offroad to make the tires fit. While the low-slung Dodge has a short list of modifications, it was easily one of the most gawked-at trucks on our recent Fullsize Invasion trail ride in Moab, Utah.

10 Tips for Driving on Big Tires Every Day

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Sure, we wanted our 1977 Ford F-150 to be streetable, but we never had intentions of driving it every day. The truck has a healthy 460ci engine built by LA Speed with a bunch of performance parts from Summit Racing Equipment, and it rides on 41.5-inch Pit Bull Rocker tires. That is about as far from a Prius as you can get. But when our daily driver went down for expensive repairs (no, it is not a Prius!) we were forced to call the Ford into action. Fuel prices are the lowest they have been in years, so the timing could not have been better.

The Tires of King of the Hammers 2012

The Pitbull Rocker is a radial tire designed for extreme off-road use.

The Pitbull Mad Dog is a radial tire built for mud, but with a slightly less aggressive tread pattern than the Rocker.

2005 4x4 & Off Road Truck Tire Test - Lugfest

Cooper Tire builds tires for the replacement market, and they are now entering the off-road arena. The company's research shows that truck owners want larger tires, especially those planning on backcountry exploring while hunting, camping, or wheeling. Cooper revealed its new 37x12.5R17LT Discoverer STT radial, and we quickly tracked down a set for testing.

Bubba Rope: 2000 Nissan Xterra

If you’ve ever been mudding with a group of guys and gotten stuck, then you know the importance of a good snatch rope. On the UA, getting stuck is simply part of the trip. Bottomless mud pits seem to appear where you least expect them. To give us a hand when we needed a quick tug out of the swamp, Bubba Rope sent two Floridians, no strangers to playing in the mud. Sharing driving duties in the monster Xterra known as the Iguana was Ricardo Olavarrieta and Faron Tidwell.
